Exporters and the public sector benefit from faster and more efficient licensing processes with SPIRE. It's a centralised end-to-end system for processing export licence applications for goods controlled by the UK government. Each stage of the process is tracked and dated, giving the flexibility and control to monitor status and progress. It has transformed a complex, paper-based and manual process with multiple systems into one centralised, highly secure, paperless and web-based system.

SPIRE is used daily by exporters, the Department for International Trade, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, the Ministry of Defence, the Department for International Development, HM Revenue & Customs and Government Communications Headquarters. About 24,000 licence applications and 4,000 enquiries are submitted each year.

SPIRE covers multiple licensing systems. The recent additions of the Goods Checker and ICMS are on FOX5 - a new and much faster version of FOXopen, the platform all Fivium applications run on.

SPIRE has won multiple awards, including the BCS Environment Project Award and the National Business Better Regulation Award. SPIRE was the finalist for the BCS Business-to-Business Award and the Public Sector Project of the Year Award.

SPIRE is a near perfect example of a business-driven IT project that clearly delivers in all areas. It demonstrates passionate and competent delivery from a small organisation, which surely has a bright future.

The industry welcomed the introduction of the new SPIRE electronic licensing system, which, almost unbelievably for a Government IT system, was actually introduced both on time and on budget!! Many of our members have responded enthusiastically to the benefits of this new system.
